MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - Students from Warren High School and Fort Frye High School graduated from a work-based learning program through the Appalachian Ohio Manufacturers Coalition, marking the program’s first graduating class.
The students spent the year gaining hands-on experience in CNC machining, welding, fabrication, electrical work and 3D printing at AOMC’s facility in Washington County.
Students completed a capstone project, building a garden trailer from the ground up by following the full engineering process, from modeling to fabrication.
AOMC trainer Jaden Martin said the experience was designed to prepare students for manufacturing careers in the region, while building soft skills like punctuality, communication and problem-solving.
“It’s been a great program to go through for people that need a path or don’t really know what they want to be when they grow up to be able to come and get this experience to be able to grow from that point,” Martin said.
The program ran through Warren High School’s Flex Friday schedule, with guidance counselors helping connect students to the opportunity.
Martin said AOMC plans to continue the program annually, with the goal of building a stronger manufacturing pipeline in Washington County.
